Welding Inspection Courses:

Welding inspection can often require a wide variety of knowledge on the part of the welding inspector: the understanding of welding drawings, welding symbols, weld joint design, welding procedures, code and standard requirements and inspection and testing techniques, to name a few. For this reason many welding codes and standards require that the welding inspector be formally qualified or have the necessary knowledge and experience to conduct the inspection services. There are a number of welding inspection training courses available and a number of welding inspector certification programs internationally. The most popular program used worldwide is administered by CSWIP.

CSWIP certification schemes are UKAS-accredited to ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for personnel certification. Certification as a welding inspector: will typically require demonstration of an individual's knowledge of welding inspection through passing examination.

The CSWIP welding inspection programme offers you an internationally recognised qualification based on your competence and a vertical progression to senior inspector, a pre-requisite for many job applications. Requiring a high level of skill and knowledge, welding inspection is an excellent career choice if you wish for a transition from a general engineering or welding background into a more specialised and prestigious role.

8 WQT as per International Codes Standards

Welder Qualification Test / Welder Performance Qualifications (WQT/WPQ) is used to test the welder skill and performance. Is the welder able to produce a sound weld, with a particular welding process, within the given range of welding variables as per the WPS?

A Welder Qualification Test is recorded on documentation known as a test certificate that details the ranges that welder is qualified. Ranges or essential variables for WQT are not always the same as those for a WPS. An example would be that is a welder can weld in the overhead position (more difficult) it is logical they be qualified in the flat position (less difficult). The welder completes a test coupon under supervision following a WPS. The weld is then tested using the method prescribed in the relevant standard.

The testing always includes as a minimum visual examination but may also require;

  1. Radiographic examination
  2. Ultrasonic examination
  3. Bend tests – root/face or sides
  4. Macro test – cross section views of weld
  5. Nick Break
  6. Macro test – cross section views of weld
