Painting Inspection Courses :
Coatings still predominate as the most important technology for protecting steel structures against corrosion. At the same time our technology faces a steadily growing demand for making corrosion protection lasts even longer. This demand is met partly by improved coatings, partly by improved methods for surface preparation and the use of advanced application equipment. At the end of the day new technology and quality workmanship only combine to attain the desired results when every step of the process is properly controlled.
Description The coating inspector must know the basics about paint technology, the influence of microclimate, surface preparation and application methods. In order to achieve the specified outcome of a coating job, a thorough knowledge of quality control and inspection skills is essential.
The painting inspector course give students a very good understanding of corrosion principles, the concept of barriers to slow down the process of corrosion and the importance of surface preparation and profiles. Paint and coating defects with a section on health and safety and report writing paint technology calculations, specific paint systems in accordance with the specification, density calculations, viscosity and holiday testing.
You can take this course with or without previous experience in painting inspection and is suitable for you if you wish to attain BGAS-CSWIP Approval as a Painting Inspector. It is also suitable for anyone engaged in the inspection new and existing coatings. This approval is very useful to welding inspectors as it can extend your working time capability on projects.
This course covers corrosion theory, surface preparation, surface contaminants and tests, paint constituents and technology, solutions and dispersions, drying and curing properties and performance, and specified painting conditions. You will also learn about cathodic protection, holiday/pinhole detection, paint-application methods, paint/paint film testing, paint identification, and metal coatings. The course will also teach you about paint faults, colour, inspection methods, specification requirements, and health and safety and working practices.
Certification Body/Scheme:
- BGAS - CSWIP
Entry Requirements:
Experience may be acquired prior to or following success in the examination. In the event that the experience is sought following successful examination, the results of the examination shall remain valid for two years.
The minimum duration for industrial experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is 6 months, showing knowledge of dry abrasive blast cleaning or industrial paint application techniques.
You will need to already hold the BGAS-CSWIP Grade 2 in paint/painting inspection to enter this course, which offers an advanced qualification, dealing specifically with offshore practices. This course covers zones of offshore structures, offshore working, safety offshore, and medical, emergency procedures/escape routes. You will also learn about permit to work systems, vessel entry and enclosed space working, scaffolding, and fire protection. In addition, the course offers information on BS 5378 safety signs and colours, BS 1710 identification of pipelines, finish colour schedule BS 4800.
You will also learn welder and procedure approval, codes and standards, and an outline of safe working practices.
Certification Body/Scheme:
- BGAS - CSWIP
Entry Requirements:
You must hold a valid BGAS Painting Inspector Grade 2 certificate prior to obtaining Grade 1. The minimum duration for industrial experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is 12 months, providing evidence of a good knowledge of offshore working, safety, and painting inspection.
You can take this course with or without previous experience in site coatings inspection and is suitable for you if you wish to attain BGAS-CSWIP Approval as a Site Coatings Inspector. It is also suitable for anyone engaged in the inspection and coating of new and existing pipelines. This approval is very useful to welding inspectors as it can extend your working time capability on pipelines projects.
This course will cover corrosion, specified coating conditions, surface preparation methods and standards, surface contaminants and tests for detection. You will also learn about coating technology, film thickness, coal tar enamels, special situations, hot applied tapes, cold applied laminate tapes, grease based tapes, and self-adhesive overwrap tapes.
You will also be taught about polyethylene cladding, fillers, mastics and putties, heat shrinkable plastics, powder coatings, urethane MCLs, holiday detection, concrete coatings, and internal coatings. The course also offers information on cathodic protection, stages of pipeline construction, handling, transport and storage, pipeline surveys, health and safety, coating faults, and working practices and quality.
Certification Body/Scheme:
- BGAS - CSWIP

The training is based on a series of sample questions and appropriate practical exercises.
Abrasive Blasting Training is often overlooked by companies. Many contractors rely on their blaster’s visual assessment of a surface to determine surface cleanliness. This can be challenging with many abrasive blasting products due to the dust released during collision between abrasive and surface. Abrasive Blasting Training creates a familiarity with equipment like “deadman safety systems” and also instructs on the benefits of ear and eye protection. Proper use of equipment is one of the biggest risk reducers in the industry. Training is modified based on the knowledge and experience of the person or group. If a person or group has more advanced subject-matter expertise, both the pace and the syllabus can be tailored for a better fit.
BCI offers a programme of industry-leading training courses to cover all aspects of surface finishing including blast cleaning, painting and inspection techniques. The core elements of our training courses focus on these key aspects of surface finishing:
- Health & Safety
- Best practice and techniques
- How to maximize the potential of your process
