Course overview

Radiographic Film Interpretation (RTFI) is an ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II Limited Certification designed specifically for engineers, inspectors, and client representatives who evaluate processed radiographic films without needing to set up radiation sources or handle exposure equipment. This specialized course trains professionals to review films, verify image quality (density, sensitivity, IQI placement), identify internal welding and casting flaws, distinguish between real defects and darkroom artifacts, and make definitive acceptance/rejection determinations according to ASME, API, and AWS codes.

Who this course is for

✓Engineering graduates and diploma holders starting a career in non-destructive testing
✓QA/QC technicians and inspectors who need a Level I or Level II qualification in this method
✓Fabrication, maintenance and plant staff who carry out or witness NDT on site

01Radiographic Principles OverviewX-ray and gamma ray properties, absorption, scattering, and geometric unsharpness (Ug).
02Radiographic Quality Verification–Optical density verification using calibrated transmission densitometers.–Density ranges: Transmitted film density requirements per ASME Section V (1.8 to 4.0 for X-ray; 2.0 to 4.0 for Gamma ray).–Image Quality Indicators (IQI): Hole-type and wire-type (ASTM / ISO / DIN); selection, placement (source side vs. film side), and identification of required wire/hole diameters.–Shims, lead markers, location markers, and radiographic contrast/definition.
03Viewing ConditionsHigh-intensity illuminators (view boxes), ambient subdued lighting, masking techniques, and eye adaptation.
04Radiographic Artifacts & False IndicationsChemical streaks, water spots, static electricity discharges, reticulation, crimp marks, scratch marks, light fog, and screen damage.
05Weld Discontinuity Identification & Evaluation–Root defects: Incomplete penetration, lack of root fusion, burn-through, suck-back/root concavity.–Volumetric flaws: Slag inclusions, tungsten inclusions, isolated and clustered porosity.–Planar defects: Longitudinal cracks, transverse cracks, and lack of side-wall fusion.
06Casting & Material DiscontinuitiesShrinkage cavities, gas porosity, hot tears, inclusions, and cold shuts.
07Code Application & Sentencing Workshops–Hands-on sentencing of real production radiographs to ASME Section VIII Div. 1 (UW-51 & UW-52).–Sentencing to ASME B31.3 (Process Piping - Normal & Severe Cyclic Conditions).–Sentencing to API 1104 (Pipelines and Related Facilities).
08ReportingPreparation of formal Radiographic Review and Non-Conformance Reports.
