Course overview

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a highly sensitive non-destructive test method designed to detect surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic components. Following ASNT SNT-TC-1A (2024) guidelines, this program provides extensive theoretical instruction and workshop practice using electromagnetic yokes, bench units, prods, and coils. Candidates learn how magnetic flux leakage lines attract fine ferromagnetic particles to form distinct flaw indications, allowing rapid evaluation of welds, castings, forgings, and machined parts. Qualification Levels Offered • Level I: Standardizes equipment, mixes and applies dry/wet magnetic media, carries out specific tests, and records observations per written instructions. • Level II: Selects magnetizing techniques, determines field strength, interprets and evaluates linear/rounded indications against code acceptance standards, generates reports, and guides Level I inspectors.

Theory of MagnetismMagnetic fields, flux lines, permeability, reluctance, magnetic saturation, and hysteresis loops.
Flux Leakage PrinciplesHow surface and subsurface flaws produce leakage fields; effect of defect orientation relative to magnetic flux.
Magnetization Techniques–Longitudinal Magnetization: Solenoids, rigid coils, and cable wraps.–Circular Magnetization: Head shots, central conductors, prods, and contact clamps.–Continuous vs. Residual magnetization methods.
Equipment & Electrical Currents–Alternating Current (AC) for surface defects (skin effect).–Direct Current (DC) and Half-Wave Rectified (HWAC) for subsurface flaw detection.–Portable electromagnetic yokes and stationary wet horizontal bench units.
Testing MediaDry magnetic powders (colored) vs. wet fluorescent suspensions (carrier oils/water conditioning).
Equipment Standardization & ChecksPie gauges, cast-iron slotted strips (cast-strip/shim indicators), Gaussmeters/Hall effect probes, and 10-lb (AC) / 40-lb (DC) yoke lift tests.
DemagnetizationPrinciples, limits of residual magnetism, and operation of AC/DC demagnetizing coils.
Evaluation & Flaw ClassificationDiscontinuities in welds (cracks, lack of fusion), forgings (laps, seams), castings (shrinkage, cold shuts), and grinding cracks; evaluation per ASME Sec. VIII, App. 6 and AWS D1.1.
